Business Simulations: Oakland Baseball Simworld Study

Joris Drayer, a doctoral student in Sports Administration at The University of Colorado and a member of the Sports Business Simulations Simulation Advisory Board (not to be confused with our SBS Corporate Advisory Board, of which Forio's a key member), wrote this great study on how students and teachers use the Oakland Baseball Simworld in class, and the user experience.

It's the first major study done on an SBS sim product.

There are two basic types of business simulations: online vs. download. Online business simulations are those that can be ran directly from your browser and anywhere there's a computer with an internet connection.

Download business simulations -- like those offered by LavaMind -- have to be downloaded from a website to your computer. Sports Business Simulations and Forio Business Simulations offer online sims for the classroom. It's our contention that these simulations are more reliable and not depended on the kind of computer you have.

For example, some downloadable sims require that you have a Windows-based computer; if you own an Apple Mac, that presents a problem.

My colleage University of San Francisco Professor Dan Rascher uses the Oakland Baseball Simworld for his Sports Economics course, and has his students play "management consultant" to the Oakland A's. They use the Oakland sim to run different kinds of scenarios using various spending and financing decisions and evaluating the outcome of each simulation run.

The Oakland sim offers over 100 decision choices; but the student can make as few as three for each "year" of the sim run.
