Business Simulations: Oakland Baseball Simworld Study

Joris Drayer, a doctoral student in Sports Administration at The University of Colorado and a member of the Sports Business Simulations Simulation Advisory Board (not to be confused with our SBS Corporate Advisory Board, of which Forio's a key member), wrote this great study on how students and teachers use the Oakland Baseball Simworld in class, and the user experience.

It's the first major study done on an SBS sim product.

It's at:

Business Simulations - Download v. Online

There are two basic types of business simulations: online vs. download. Online business simulations are those that can be ran directly from your browser and anywhere there's a computer with an internet connection.

Download business simulations -- like those offered by LavaMind -- have to be downloaded from a website to your computer. Sports Business Simulations and Forio Business Simulations offer online sims for the classroom. It's our contention that these simulations are more reliable and not depended on the kind of computer you have.

For example, some downloadable sims require that you have a Windows-based computer; if you own an Apple Mac, that presents a problem.

Business Simulations For The Classroom Pt 3

My colleage University of San Francisco Professor Dan Rascher uses the Oakland Baseball Simworld for his Sports Economics course, and has his students play "management consultant" to the Oakland A's. They use the Oakland sim to run different kinds of scenarios using various spending and financing decisions and evaluating the outcome of each simulation run.

The Oakland sim offers over 100 decision choices; but the student can make as few as three for each "year" of the sim run.

Business Simulations For The Classroom Pt 2

IF you click on the title to this post, Forio Business Simulations has a great series of sims for your classroom.
In addition, Sports Business Simulations has the Oakland Baseball Simworld and The XFL Simworld ready for your classroom.

Business Simulations For The Classroom

Sports Business Simulations offers simulations of sports organizations for use in the classroom. Currently, we have two simulations, the XFL Simworld and the Oakland Baseball Simworld.

You can read about how our simulations are employed in the classroom here.

What Is A Business Simulation?

A simulation is an imitation of some real thing, state of affairs, or process. The act of simulating something generally entails representing certain key characteristics or behaviors of a selected physical or abstract system.

If there's a social media platform, chances are Zennie is one of the first to use it. If there's a new media platform, it's a good chance he's on it.  Zennie is described as a person who's everywhere online, and for good reason.

He is a daily user of digital and social media and one of the first YouTube Partners, video-bloggers who are paid from the videos they product on YouTube. His YouTube channel Zennie62 and his Blip.tv channel of the same name were created in 2006. He was on the iReport before CNN bought it. And Zennie has used Twitter since 2008.

He has owned a blog network since 2004, and now consists of over 70 blogs, with Zennie62.com as its flagship blog, and popular local city blogs like Oakland Focus and Atlanta Focus.

Zennie is also a game developer, having started Sports Business Simulations, and created a baseball sim called The Oakland Baseball Simworld and the XFL Simworld.  They grew out of his background and experience in urban planning; as Economic Adviser to the Mayor of Oakland, a time when Zennie also headed an effort to bring the 2005 Super Bowl to Oakland (Jacksonville won).

With Zennie.tv, and Zennie62Media Zennie has interviewed some of the most popular celebrities and relevant politicians of our day.

Contact him for consulting in social media, as a TV show guest on the social issues of the day, for vlogging, and for game development.
